BADGE REQUIREMENTS

GIRL SCOUT ROCKHOUNDING

| Home | TROOP PHOTO GALLERY | BADGE REQUIREMENTS

Here are the badge requirements for the Cadette badge~ Digging into the Past ~

Skill Builder ~
 1. Hike and examine the geology of the region~
*This requires a trip to the mine...I am a licensed miner and will go with them to the mine and show them the geology, explaining how the crystal was formed, how old they are, etc. You may keep everything you dig and can carry, including big, garden rock clusters that can be found there.  With five acres to dig, and with a trained eye you can find lots of good stuff in the mine.

2. Grow your own crystals.

3. Make a collection of rocks, minerals and fossils.
*We keep tailings here where I can pre-arrange an actual dig of different rocks, minerals and fossils. The girls will keep the stones that I seed and anything else they find in a half hour dig, thereby making a collection.  They keep all they find, with me showing  them how to recognize, dig and identify their stones.

4. Learn what skills and scientific aids are needed for an excavation and what the earth can reveal about the past.

5. Find out about different types of fossils
*I have quite a collection of different types of fossils in my shop and include a mini-class on fossils in my presentation.

Technology~

1. What technology is used to map the ocean floor Or the surface of the earth?

2. Put together a geologist's adventure kit that includes tools and equipment needed.
*In bringing the all they need to dig, they will complete this. A discussion can be held first, and then I can provide them with a more complete list, if needed.

3. Investigate how modern technology assists in recreating art and artifacts.

4. Find out about earthquakes and the frequency with which they occur in your state.

Service Projects~

1. Set up a rock &  mineral search for younger girls~
*This the girls could do when they return, maybe sharing some of the crystals and other things they dug here with one girl each. May I suggest doing it in sand for the younger girls; the stones will be easier to see and dig with less fuss.

2. Do a project to reduce erosion in your area

3. Find out how weathering occurs and what effect it has on rocks and soils.  visit places in your area where you can observe the effects of weathering.

4. Collect some objects to use as mock fossils with younger girls.  Make fossils with the objects and plaster Paris.

5. Find out about environmental issues in your area.  How can you rise public awareness about these issues.

Career Exploration ~

1.Invite someone who works in a geology-related field to speak to your troop.
*I am a licensed miner who will be happy to speak to your troops about the mining industry.

2. Read about an individual who has a job in one of the earth sciences.

3. Select an earth related science and interview someone who has made a career in it.
*I've made a career of mining crystal and keep tailings here in order to share the knowledge and the experience of the dig, and to sell what we mine in our shops.

4. Do a college search to find out which schools offer programs in any of the fields related to earth history and/or geology.
